END CREDITS REVIEWS: THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

RATING: HAVEN'T STOPPED THINKING ABOUT IT

Original Release: 2022

Directed By: Martin McDonaugh

Cast: Colin Farrell, Brandon Gleeson, Barry Keoghan

The Banshees of Inisherin has a strange and unique premise. But also a very simple premise. There are two friends played by Collin Farrell and Brandon Gleeson and they were best friends. But now Brandon Gleeson doesn’t wanna be friends anymore. And in as many words that’s the basic premise.

Such a simple idea, but a very interesting one. I really enjoyed seeing how this one small issue played out amongst these two. The setting on a small island near Ireland is absolutely gorgeous. And also adds to the themes of loneliness and depression because of how small and separated the island is.

Both leads were great, the score was enchanting and I really enjoyed the main locations that the scenes were set in (a charming little pub with live Irish music and a small shack of a house right on the beach). I thought it was a little repetitive at times (repetition is one of the main themes of the movie after all).

But I think McDonagh does a great job with tone and mood. He balances his signature humour and the seriousness of the subject matter real well. It made me feel the boredom and repetitiveness of life. As well as the sinking feeling of being stuck and not being able to move, resulting in the overwhelming desire to get out no matter what. Very excited for a rewatch.

(End Credit Review Rules:

1. I watch a movie at the cinemas and start reviewing the film as soon as the end credits start. As soon as the end credits finish I have to stop writing.

2. I’m allowed to go over what I’ve written once just to make sure it makes sense. And that’s it.

3. I will rate the movie according to how likely I am to watch again.
